
Recognising that some communities have been disadvantaged by policies of the past, Ithala Dev. Finance Corp. Ltd (Ithala) has decided to formulate its own Black Economic Empowerment Policy, with the intention of effectively and efficiently redressing the imbalances of the past. Proposed focus areas have been identified and developed to ensure that the implementation of this policy is both easy and measurable.

The KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority, which operates under the name Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, is responsible for the development, promotion and marketing of tourism into and within the province. The Authority’s statement of intent and direction is drawn from the mandate vested in the Organisation by the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Act, 1996 (as amended, including No. 2 of 2002).

The KZNSB services a combination of shark nets and recently-deployed drumlines, spread at intervals along 320 km of coastline in KwaZulu-Natal, thereby providing protection against shark attack at 38 localities. It employs about 170 staff members, most of whom put to sea on 15 boats to service the equipment. The other members of staff are engaged in research, administration, public relations, store-keeping and maintenance.

The KwaZulu-Natal Growth Fund is a project finance facility which has been developed and established by the Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal to fund large economic projects (+R30 million in value) in the Province which can stimulate faster growth and job creation. The Fund will be capitalized to over R5 billion over the next 3 years, with R1.7 billion of this being invested by the KZN Provincial Government. The Fund is biased towards financing the infrastructural components of large projects where it is more difficult to raise commercial loan finance.

The Dube TradePort is an advantageously located world-class infrastructural development for South Africa, combining a new and contemporary international airport with an adjacent and comprehensively packaged trade port, all integrally designed to promote tourism and the flow of manufactured goods entering and leaving the country.

The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) is a purpose-built and secure industrial estate on the North-eastern South African coast. It encourages international competitiveness through tax and duty-free incentives, world-class infrastructure and one of the lowest electricity rates in the world. Existing multi-nationals who have invested in the area include, inter alia, BHP Billiton, RBM and Exxaro. Not only have they proven the attractiveness of the area, but they have also created numerous downstream beneficiation opportunities.

The Moses Kotane institute was established in January 2009, with the aim of making a contribution to addressing the shortfalls in performance in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) in our province.
The Institute is implementing a diverse range of programmes to target the key drivers underpinning performance in STEM, including educators, learners and government.
