Consumers have to be careful when engaging household appliance repair companies as there are many unscrupulous businesses out there.  It is always advisable to double check that you are actually dealing with a registered dealer or agent of the product, ie Defy, Whirlpool, LG, etc.  You could contact the store you purchased the product from and obtain the contact details direct from them.

Builders
When entering into contract with builders it is very important to make sure you obtain references from them before you sign the contract.  Read the contract carefully to ensure that you understand the terms and conditions.  Do not pay all the moneys in advance and do not make the last payment until you are satisfied with the work.  Making use of members of the Master Builders Assoc (MBA) 031 - 266 7070 and it affiliates will give some protection.

Micro Lenders
Consumers have to be careful when borrowing money from micro lenders.  Ensure that they are registered with the Micro Finance Regulatory Council (MFRC) 0860 100 406 and read the contract carefully.  Consumers must keep in mind the cost of debt could be more than 50 % of the actual amount borrowed and should take this into consideration. 

They must also be on the lookout when buying furniture that they do not sign a "Loan Agreement" as this will mean that they are charged a higher interest rate than if they would enter into a "High Purchase (HP) Agreement".
